Having a Baby in Northern Arizona?

Consider Safe and Comprehensive Midwifery Care

Welcome! We are certified professional midwives specializing in home birth, out-of-hospital birth, and water birth. We encourage all women to find a midwife or physician that provides complete and holistic pregnancy care, childbirth education classes, continuous support during labor and birth, breastfeeding care, and physician referrals when needed or desired. We are dedicated to serving Flagstaff and Northern Arizona families in just this way!

There are no accredited birth centers in Northern Arizona, but many women desiring birthing center options find that we can meet their needs by providing similar care in their own home, or at several home-like settings nearer to the Flagstaff hospital.

What is a Certified Professional Midwife?

Certified professional midwives (CPM’s) are nationally certified after completing a comprehensive midwifery education. They provide the Midwives Model of Care to pregnant women and families in a variety of settings, including birth centers, homes and hospitals. Today, midwives deliver 80% of the world’s babies. Did you know that the countries with the best pregnancy outcome statistics use midwives as primary providers of maternity care? United States ranks low on the list of industrialized countries with better pregnancy outcomes. In Arizona, midwives are licensed and regulated by the state. Arizona certified and licensed midwives have also shown excellent safety outcomes.

Our Philosophy ~

Birth is a normal healthy experience and homebirth is an excellent option for women in good general health. Every woman has the right to safe, satisfying health care and every family has the right to participate in decisions regarding pregnancy and birth, and to experience a family-centered birth. We have a strong belief that not only is every woman different, but also each pregnancy and birth. For this reason, we use few interventions and let labors unfold at their natural pace and in their unique way. As midwives, we are facilitators of a natural process, and believe in non-intervention, as long as it is safe.

Midwives Model of Care ~

The Midwives Model of Care includes:

  • Monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle
  • Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support
  • Minimizing technological interventions, and
  • Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention.

The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.

"...we went to meet with the midwives at Womancare Midwifery. Their whole philosophy was much more
in line with ours; that birth doesn't have to be a medical event...The midwives made us feel safe and empowered."
